Most modern bicycles have disc brakes. Just like on a motorbike or a car, they need regular care: dirt, dust and grease on the rotors reduce braking power and wear the pads faster. Here is how to clean them in 15 minutes.

What you need
- WD-40 BIKE Degreaser
- Clean lint-free rags
- Bike repair stand (optional but handy)
- A container to catch the excess product
- Clean water
Important: never apply lubricant to brake rotors or pads, including WD-40 Multi-Use Product. Rotors need a degreaser that leaves no film.
Step 1
Prepare the area
Work outdoors or in a workshop. Put the bike on a stand or turn it upside down on the saddle and handlebars so the wheels spin freely. Place a container under the rotors.

Step 2
Apply the degreaser
Shake the can and spray the degreaser on both sides of the rotor. Let it work for a few seconds to dissolve grease, oil, dust and dirt.

Step 3
Wipe and rinse
Wipe the rotor with a clean rag. If dirt remains, repeat step 2. Then rinse the rotor with clean water and dry it.

Step 4
Test the brakes
Spin the wheels and squeeze the brake levers several times. Always test braking at low speed before riding.
What next
After the rotors, clean the chain with the same degreaser and lubricate it. After rides in forests, mountains or sand, check the bike, chain and rotors more often. To protect frame hardware, bolts and cables from moisture and rust, use WD-40 Multi-Use Product, but never on the brakes.
