How to Clean and Protect Car Chrome

How to clean chrome trim, grilles and bumpers on your car, remove spots and protect chrome from road salt and moisture. Tips from the official WD-40 dealer.

A chrome grille, trim strips, door handles, number plate surrounds and exhaust tips make a car look smart, but they are the first to suffer from winter de-icers, tar and hard water spots after washing.

Dull patches and orange specks do not mean the part is ruined. Regular cleaning and a thin protective film bring back the shine and hold corrosion off for years.

What you will need

  • WD-40 Multi-Use
  • warm water with car shampoo
  • a soft sponge
  • clean, dry microfibre cloths
  • masking tape to protect neighbouring surfaces (if needed)
Important: Keep the product off brake discs, tyres and the windscreen. Work in the shade on a cool body, and test first on a hidden area of any matt or chrome-effect painted plastic.
Step 1

Apply the product to the chrome

Rinse dust and grit off the parts first so you do not scratch the chrome. Then apply WD-40 Multi-Use evenly to the chrome areas: grille, trim strips, handles and surrounds. For large areas such as bumpers and wheels, WD-40 Trigger Pro is easier to work with.

If there is matt plastic or fresh paint next to the chrome, mask the edge with tape so the product does not reach places it is not needed and leave marks.

Step 2

Let it work

Leave the product for a few minutes. In that time it softens tar spots, insect remains, water marks and light surface rust, so they come away without effort.

Step 3

Wash the chrome

Wash the parts with warm water, car shampoo and a soft sponge to remove the dirt along with the product residue. Use a soft brush on the grille slots and trim corners. Avoid abrasive pastes and hard scourers.

Give the exhaust tips separate attention: soot bakes on harder there, so let the product work longer and repeat the wash if needed. Only clean a cold exhaust.

Step 4

Dry and protect

Rinse thoroughly and dry the chrome with clean microfibre. Then put a little WD-40 Multi-Use on a dry cloth and wipe a thin layer over the parts: it displaces moisture and adds protection against corrosion.

After a few minutes, buff the surface with a dry cloth to an even shine.

Tip: Be especially thorough with the protective layer before winter: salt and de-icers on Ukrainian roads eat into lower trim strips and number plate surrounds fastest. A can of WD-40 200 ml fits neatly in the boot.

What next

Clean and protect the chrome once a month, and after every wash in winter. While you are at it, treat the door locks and hinges with WD-40 Multi-Use so they do not freeze in frost. Stiff doors and creaking door checks also come back to life after a few drops.

These uses come from the experience of WD-40 users in many countries. Always follow the instructions and warnings on the product label.
