A stepper is a great machine for cardio and burning calories, and it is compact, so many people keep one at home. To make it last for years, run smoothly and stay free of squeaks and knocks, it needs simple but regular care.
Its main enemies are sweat, dust and pet hair, plus pivots left without lubrication. Here is how to keep it in good order.
What you will need
Important: Do not apply lubricant to the pedals, handles or handrails: they will become slippery. If the stepper has a powered display, disconnect it before cleaning and never spray products onto the electronics.
Step 1
Wipe the stepper after every workout
Sweat contains salts that attack metal and paint. After each session, wipe the pedals, handrails and frame with a damp cloth, then dry them. For the metal frame and fixings, spray a little WD-40 Multi-Use onto a cloth and wipe them over: it lifts remaining dirt and protects against rust.
Step 2
Give it a deep clean once a year
Dip a soft brush in soapy water and work over hard-to-reach areas: under the pedals and around the pivots and cylinders. Remove dust, lint and hair, then wipe dry.
Then treat the tubes, joints and metal parts with WD-40 Multi-Use as after a normal workout, to shift ingrained dirt and protect the metal from moisture.
Step 3
Lubricate pivots and moving parts
At least every two months, lubricate the components with plastic and rubber parts: pedal pivots, bushings and cylinder mounting points. Apply WD-40 Specialist Silicone and pump the pedals a few times to spread it. The silicone formula stops squeaks, protects against moisture and prevents rust; it suits plastic, rubber and metal and refreshes their look. Wipe off the excess.

Step 4
Check and tighten the fixings
After cleaning and lubricating, check all screws, nuts and covers. Vibration loosens them over time, which causes knocks and play. Tighten them with the right tool without overtightening plastic parts.
Step 5
Inspect the cylinders and pedals
Check the hydraulic cylinders for leaks and make sure both pedals move down evenly. Cracks in the housing, heavy leaks or uneven travel should be dealt with before your next workout, either by a service centre or by replacing the part as the manufacturer instructs.
Tip: Put a rubber mat under the stepper: it absorbs vibration, protects the floor and reduces the amount of dust getting into the pivots.
What next
Wipe the machine after every session, lubricate the pivots every two months and deep clean it once a year. For precise application into tight pivots, a WD-40 Smart Straw with its precision straw is handy.
These uses come from the experience of WD-40 users in many countries. Always follow the instructions and warnings on the product label.
