How to maintain industrial machines

Lubricating and rust-proofing industrial machines and conveyors: which product goes where and how to keep a schedule. Tips from the official WD-40 dealer.

In production, even a short line stoppage costs more than a year of planned maintenance. Most breakdowns of machine tools, conveyors and presses start with two things: poorly lubricated moving parts and corrosion on metal standing in a damp workshop.

A good lubricant has to do more than reduce friction. It must stay in place under load, resist washing off, avoid collecting dust and protect the surface from moisture. That is why each type of component deserves its own product.

What you will need

Important: Only work on machines that are stopped and isolated from power with start-up locked out (a tag or padlock on the isolator). Never apply lubricants to brake or friction surfaces.
Step 1

Clean components before lubricating

Fresh lubricant over old grease mixed with swarf and dust turns into an abrasive paste. First remove old deposits with a brush and rag, and clear away swarf and leaks of process fluids.

WD-40 Multi-Use softens sticky residue and grime well: apply, wait a few minutes and wipe dry.

Step 2

Lubricate parts under load

Treat bearings, hinges, shafts, slides and pivots that work under weight or in damp conditions with WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease. It stays on the surface, does not run off vertical parts and reduces noise and heat.

Apply a thin, even coat, turn the component by hand a few times to spread it, and wipe off any excess.

Step 3

Treat plastic and rubber parts

Seals, flexible gaiters, plastic guides and rollers do not tolerate petroleum products. Use WD-40 Specialist Silicone on them: it reduces friction without harming polymers or rubber.

For chains and conveyors in dusty areas a dry film works better, for example WD-40 Specialist Dry Lubricant available on request, as it does not attract dust or swarf.

Step 4

Protect metal from moisture and rust

Housings, frames, exposed steel surfaces, spare shafts and parts waiting for assembly suffer from condensation, especially in unheated workshops in autumn and winter. A thin coat of WD-40 Multi-Use displaces moisture and slows oxidation.

In large facilities the WD-40 5 l can with sprayer is more practical.

Step 5

Free seized fasteners

If bolts, studs or shafts are seized with rust, do not force them. Apply WD-40 Specialist Penetrant, allow 10-15 minutes to soak in, repeat if needed and only then undo them.

Step 6

Build maintenance into your procedures

Draw up a lubrication chart: which components, which product and how often. Record every intervention in a log so you can track wear and plan part replacement in advance rather than after a breakdown.

Tip: Mark the lubrication points on the machines with colour codes matching the product. That way even a new operator will not confuse silicone with lithium grease.

What next

Inspect and lubricate critical components according to the manufacturer's schedule, and repeat protective treatment of metal at least once a season and after every machine wash. For small precision jobs keep a can of WD-40 Smart Straw to hand.

These uses come from the experience of WD-40 users in many countries. Always follow the instructions and warnings on the product label.
