How to use WD-40 Specialist Degreaser

Water-based WD-40 Specialist Degreaser for engines, underbodies, wheels, tools and food processing areas. Step-by-step guide from the official WD-40 dealer.

WD-40 Specialist Degreaser is designed for heavy-duty cleaning in the workshop and at home alike. Its water-based formula is NSF A8 certified and suits metal, aluminium, plastic and rubber without damaging them.

It removes oil, grease build-up, technical fluids and road grime, so it is just as useful in a workshop, garage, production area or kitchen. Below is the basic application technique followed by several practical scenarios.

What you will need

Important: Do not let the product dry on the surface, or the loosened dirt will settle back as marks. Only wash an engine when it is cold, and cover electrical connectors, the alternator and control units. Test new or painted surfaces on a hidden area first.
Step 1

Apply the product

Spray WD-40 Specialist Degreaser directly onto the dirty surface. For light soiling you can dilute it with water as recommended on the label; use it neat on old deposits.

Leave it for a few seconds to soften the grease, but do not let it dry. In hot weather or strong sun, work in small sections.

Step 2

Wipe off the dirt and rinse

Remove the loosened dirt with a damp cloth, using a brush in grooves and on fins. Then rinse the surface with clean water.

That leaves no streaks or product residue, and the surface is ready for painting, bonding or further use.

Step 3

Engine and car underbody

Winter and spring roads leave a mix of mud, salt and oil seepage on the underbody. Apply the degreaser to the dirty components, let it work, wipe with a damp cloth and rinse with water.

A clean engine is easier to inspect: a fresh oil or coolant leak shows up immediately. Once dry, metal brackets and fixings can be protected with a thin coat of WD-40 Multi-Use Product.

Step 4

Wheels and exterior surfaces

To bring back the shine on steel, alloy or chrome wheels, spray the product, leave it for a few seconds and rinse with clean water. Brake dust and road film come off easily.

Do not deliberately apply it to brake discs or pads; if any gets there, rinse thoroughly with water.

Step 5

Tools, garden equipment and sports gear

Garden tools, outdoor furniture, bicycles and sports equipment collect stubborn dirt. The degreaser removes oil, grease and soil without harming the surfaces.

After washing and drying, protect metal parts from rust with WD-40 Multi-Use Product, and lubricate heavily loaded pivots and springs with WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease.

Step 6

Production and food processing areas

Thanks to its NSF A8 certification, the degreaser can be used to clean equipment and surfaces in areas where food is processed.

Apply, let it work and rinse thoroughly with water so that neither grease nor product remains. Follow your site's own hygiene procedures.

Tip: On large areas, dilute the product and apply it with a hand pump sprayer from the bottom up, then rinse from the top down: this prevents streaks drying on surfaces that are still dirty.

What next

Keep the degreaser in the workshop as a standard step before repairs, painting and inspections. After cleaning, remember protection: WD-40 Multi-Use Product for metal and WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease for loaded moving joints.

These uses come from the experience of WD-40 users in many countries. Always follow the instructions and warnings on the product label.
