How to choose and use the WD-40 Specialist range

How to pick the right WD-40 Specialist product: penetrant, white lithium grease, silicone and contact cleaner. Practical tips from the official WD-40 dealer.

Classic WD-40 Multi-Use handles hundreds of small jobs, but some tasks call for a specialist. That is what the WD-40 Specialist range is for: each product is designed for one specific action and does it better than an all-rounder.

The key is to define the job correctly: freeing something, lubricating under load for a long time, protecting rubber and plastic, or cleaning electrics. Below we explain how to choose the product and how to apply it so the result lasts.

What you will need

Important: Isolate equipment from the power supply before working on electrics. Work in a ventilated area, do not spray near naked flames and never apply lubricants to brakes or tyres.
Step 1

Define the job

Before choosing a product, be clear about what needs doing. A seized or rusted joint needs a penetrant, a load-bearing friction point needs a thick grease, rubber and plastic parts need silicone, and oxidised contacts need a cleaner that leaves no film.

If the job is mixed, such as stripping down a rusty mechanism and reassembling it, you will need two products: one for dismantling and another for reassembly.

Step 2

Prepare the surface

Lubricants only work on clean parts. Brush off dirt, sand and old build-up, then wipe the part with a dry rag. If it is wet after rain or washing, let it dry first.

Step 3

Free seized joints

Apply WD-40 Specialist Penetrant to the thread of a rusty bolt, nut or hinge and wait a few minutes. It works into micro-gaps and breaks up the rust. Undo the joint with the correct tool, without jerking, and reapply if needed.

Step 4

Grease parts under load

For gate hinges, garage door tracks, pivots, cables and any metal-on-metal mechanism, use WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease. It goes on as a thick layer that does not drip or wash off in the rain, so it lasts even outdoors.

Step 5

Protect rubber and plastic

Apply WD-40 Specialist Silicone to door seals, window runners, plastic mechanisms and ropes. Silicone repels water and stops rubber drying out or freezing shut in winter. Wipe off the excess so the surface is not slippery.

Step 6

Clean electrical contacts

Spray WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner onto isolated connectors, terminals, switches and circuit boards. It dissolves dust, moisture and oxidation and evaporates quickly without residue. Only switch the equipment back on once everything is completely dry.

Tip: Do not mix products at random on the same part: after using the penetrant, wipe the part clean and only then apply grease or silicone. The new lubricant will then spread evenly and last longer.

What next

Keep WD-40 Multi-Use to hand for everyday small jobs and reach for the Specialist products wherever you need a long-lasting, precise result. Inspect treated parts regularly and renew the lubricant at the start and end of each season.

These uses come from the experience of WD-40 users in many countries. Always follow the instructions and warnings on the product label.
