How to lubricate car seat rails

How to clean and lubricate car seat rails: vacuum, remove old grease, apply white lithium grease and stop rust. Practical tips from the official WD-40 dealer.

Seat rails rarely make it onto a car care checklist, yet that is exactly where sand, crumbs, coins and dirt from shoes end up. In winter, moisture and road salt carried in on boots join them. The result is a seat that moves stiffly, sticks or squeaks, while the rails and mounting bolts start to rust.

To keep the mechanism quiet and long-lasting, clean and lubricate the rails from time to time. This matters most in three-door cars, where the front seats are moved all the time.

What you will need

Important: Move power seats only with their switches and never spray products onto connectors or wiring under the seat. Protect the upholstery with a cloth and keep lubricant off mats and pedals.
Step 1

Vacuum the rails

There is no point putting fresh grease on dirty rails, so start by cleaning. Slide the seat fully back and vacuum everything underneath, paying particular attention to the rails. Use a brush to dig sand and crumbs out of tight spots.

Then move the seat fully forward and clean the rear section of the rails.

Step 2

Remove old grease and grime

Old grease mixed with sand acts like an abrasive. Apply a small amount of WD-40 Multi-Use to the rails to soften the residue and wipe it off with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Repeat until the cloth comes away clean.

If you spot rust on the seat mounting bolts, spray them with WD-40 Specialist Penetrant: it works its way under corrosion and makes future servicing easier.

Step 3

Apply white lithium grease

For long-lasting protection, use WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease. It is thick and water-resistant, does not run off vertical surfaces and stays where you put it. The straw lets you apply it precisely without soiling the upholstery.

Apply a small amount along the full length of the rails, then slide the seat from stop to stop several times to spread it evenly. Wipe off any excess that squeezes out.

Step 4

Treat other metal parts

While you have the can to hand, lubricate the door hinges and check straps, and the bonnet and boot hinges. White Lithium Grease copes with both summer heat and winter frost, so it works well on any metal part of the car that needs lubrication.

Step 5

Check the seat operation

Sit in the seat and adjust it a few times. The latch should click firmly into each position and the movement should be smooth and silent. Make sure the seat is securely locked before you drive off.

Tip: After winter, when snow and road salt have been in the cabin, check the seat rails first: salt quickly starts rust on rails and bolts, and timely cleaning and lubrication stop it early.

What next

Clean and lubricate the rails once a year, or every six months in cars where the seats are moved daily. For quick fixes to cabin squeaks, keep WD-40 Smart Straw with its precision straw in the car.

These uses come from the experience of WD-40 users in many countries. Always follow the instructions and warnings on the product label.
